Baptism

Baptism is the sacrament of belonging to, and membership in the Church, which is the Body of Christ. In the celebration of Baptism God shares with us the gift of His own Divine Life. New members are welcomed into the community of faith at St. Barnabas each week. Baptism is celebrated during Mass on the first Sunday of the month and at 2:00 PM on all other Sundays. Parents of infants to be baptized need to be registered in the parish and have attended the Baptism Preparation Class. Children from ages 4 to 6 are prepared for the Sacrament during the Mini Sunday School, those between 7 and 17 are prepared in the CCD Program and those adults who are over 17 are prepared in the RCIA Program. Godparents must have a certificate of eligibility from their parish.

Confirmation

Confirmation is the sacrament in which we experience, affirm, and receive in a deeper way the life of the Spirit that we first received in Baptism. This sacrament is usually celebrated in the spring of a teen’s eighth grade year. The Bishop of the Diocese is the usual administrator of the sacrament. Regular attendance and continuous participation in the religious Education Program is a prerequisite. For more information about Confirmation or our Religious Ed program, please go to the Faith Formation/Religious Education Section of our website. Adults will be prepared for the sacrament through the RCIA Program and will be confirmed at the Easter Vigil celebration. Information on RCIA can also be found under the Faith Formation tab.  Sponsors need a certificate of eligibility from their parish.

Anointing of the Sick

NO LONGER referred to as “Last Rites,” the sick may request this anointing at any time they feel the need for God’s grace and healing love. During the year we have communal celebrations of Anointing during Lent and Advent at Mass. This is announced beforehand in the Sunday Bulletin. At Community Medical Center this sacrament is celebrated by the Catholic Chaplain. At the nursing station the sick person or a family member should ask that the Chaplain be called. Do not wait until the person is near death. The Sacrament is not only for the terminally ill but for any and all the sick.
